English phrasal verb practice with "shut down" and "shut up"

One Saturday, Sam and his friends visited their favorite arcade in town. They had been looking forward to playing games all week. But when they got there, they were surprised to see the place shut down [je zavřeno]. There was a sign on the door, "Closed for Maintenance. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Sam was disappointed. "They shut down the whole place! [Zavřeli celý podnik!] Now what?" he asked his friends.

His friend Maria suggested, "Let's go to the park instead." They all agreed, hoping it would cheer them up.

At the park, Sam and his friends started playing on the exercise poles and bars. They were having fun, but Sam was still thinking about the arcade. He missed playing his favorite video game. Maria finally said nicely, "Sam, could you please shut up [mohl bys prosím tě přestat mluvit] about the arcade? Let’s just enjoy the park!"

Sam knew then that he was talking too much about the arcade. Later they all played tag and soccer. Finally, Sam was laughing and enjoying himself.

Later that day, Sam's dad picked them up from the park. On the drive home, Sam's dad said, "Did you hear? The arcade is going to shut down [se bude zavírat] permanently. They can’t afford to keep it open anymore."

Sam and his friends were shocked and sad. Back at home, Sam couldn't stop thinking about the arcade. He wished he could shut down [aby mohl vypnout] all the sad thoughts in his head. To help him, he invited his friends over the next day to play video games at his house.

The next day, Sam and his friends had a great time playing video games together. Even if the arcade was shut down [byla zavřená], they could still have fun together.

Sam also learned one big thing. He learned to shut up [zmlknout] about the things he couldn’t change to enjoy other things happening right now.
